Preparing Your Quilt

Follow these easy steps for the best results!

QUILT TOP

MAKE SURE QUILT TOP IS FLAT AND SQUARE

This will ensure the design you choose comes out perfect.

SEW AROUND THE EDGE

If borders are pieced, sew â…› inch around the outside edge of the quilt. This will help keep secure during

the quilting process.

TRIM LOOSE THREADS

Clip threads on the front and back of the quilt. Uncut threads can show through the top of the quilt if not cut.

PRESS WELL

Don’t iron your quilt top. This may cause stretching.

MARK THE TOP OF THE QUILT

Use a piece of painter’s tape, masking tape, or safety pin to mark the top of your quilt.

QUILT BACKING

BACKING SIZE

Backing must be 6-8 inches larger than the quilt top.

PIECED BACKING

If backing is pieced, use a generous ½ inch seam allowance and press the seam open to help reduce bulk.

MARK TOP OF BACKING

If your backing is directional, mark the top with painter’s tape, masking tape, or a safety pin.

TYPE OF FABRIC

Minky and cuddle fabrics make great backings, but please avoid fleece and other knit backings as they do not quilt well.

QUILT BATTING

BATTING SIZE

Batting must be 6-8 inches larger than the quilt top.

TYPE OF BATTING

If providing own batting, please contact me to ensure batting is suitable for machine quilting.  Some lofts of batting will affect the quality of quilting.

BINDING

2 ½ INCH STRIPS

If you would like the binding to be attached by me, please prepare your binding strips at 2 ½ inches wide.  Please have diagonal seams when creating the binding.  The length should be the perimeter of the quilt plus 12 inches.

BINDING FABRIC

Please include necessary amount of fabric if you would like binding strips made for you.
